Dongseob Lee Receives the Grand Prize at the 2nd Next-Generation Engineering Researcher Awards
Dongseob Lee, an integrated M.S.–Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at POSTECH (advisor: Prof. Wonbin Hong), has been awarded the Grand Prize at the 2nd Next-Generation Engineering Researcher Awards, hosted by the Institute for Promotion of Engineering and Science of Korea (IPESK).
The Next-Generation Engineering Researcher Award is granted through a rigorous evaluation process to students recommended by the deans of engineering colleges nationwide. Candidates must have demonstrated outstanding research achievements within the past three years—such as publishing first-author papers in internationally recognized journals, receiving best paper awards at domestic or international conferences, or earning top honors in science and technology competitions. At POSTECH, only up to ten graduate students from the Department of Electrical Engineering are eligible to advance to the final round. Among these finalists, Lee achieved the highest evaluation score, earning the distinction of the Grand Prize.
Lee’s research focuses on transparent antenna technologies for next-generation display-based wireless communication and sensing. He pioneered the ISAC (Antenna-on-Display for Integrated Sensing and Communication) field by proposing a unified architecture that spans from the chip level to the display panel. His technology enables high-efficiency communication and precision sensing simultaneously across a wide range of application platforms, including drones, mobile devices, smartwatches, vehicles, satellites, and flexible or stretchable devices.
To date, Lee has authored or co-authored 20 SCI journal papers, 30 conference papers, and 4 domestic and international patents, earning international recognition for both the originality and technical excellence of his work.
His research has been validated through extensive experimental demonstrations and near–product-level implementations, and has further expanded its impact through collaborations with domestic and global industry partners. Additionally, his strong record of journal publications, patent filings, and awards has firmly established the significance and innovation of his contributions.
The judging committee commented, “This research represents a creative convergence of radio engineering, optoelectronics, and advanced materials engineering, and holds significant national impact in the integrated communication–sensing domains of 5G and 6G.”
